As our first major charity event came to a close last week, I could not help but wonder if we had really cultivated some small fraction of change. Only today, 7 days later did I receive my answer.
From the parents of the children to whom the supplies were donated, the kids were “simply ecstatic.” From showing off their new animal-shaped erasers to the geometry sets, their happiness “knew no bounds.”
Aside from the simple innocent joy they obtained, the supplies will allow their parents/ guardians (many of the kids were orphans) some breathing space with finances. Unfortunately, Elementary Education in Pakistan is not free nor subsidized by the government and so the primary caretakers foot the bill for all costs. Enabling some savings allows them to make more crucial, immediate purchases whose positive effect dissipates to the children.
The recipients will also get a desperately needed morale boost. Knowing that they are provided with the tools of knowledge and are supported by others in the community, will certainly provide a nudge of encouragement.
After I met these kids, there was no doubt in my mind that they would make good use of the donated materials. I had such a tremendous time just sitting and talking with them, that I cannot wait to be back in their classroom! My only regret was that I was unable to spend more time, and not able to give more to these lovely little angels.
